The British Inline Puck Hockey Association is recognised by the British Roller Sports Federation, UK Sport and the UK Home Country Sports Councils as the Great Britain Governing Body for the sport of Inline Puck Hockey played to the rules of the International Federation of Roller Sports (FIRS), these rules being based upon the ethos of non checking, with no blue and red line offside rules.
The
British Inline Puck Hockey Association, also known as the BIPHA has been
in existence for some thirteen years mostly under the leadership of Glynn
White. During Glynn’s term of office the association has steadily
grown to the point where it now has regions and leagues in England,
Scotland, and Wales. The
International Federation of Roller Sports (FIRS) is recognised by
the International Olympic Committee and is also a member
of the International World Games Association. FIRS is currently
in discussions to have roller sports admitted to future Olympic Games.
The
Confederation European Roller Skating (CERS) co-ordinates the various
FIRS roller sports disciplines within Europe.
The British Roller Sports Federation represents the interests of Artistic, Speed, Rink Hockey and Inline Hockey in discussions with the UK Sports Councils and national funding organisations. Click Here for a organisation chart for FIRS, CERS & BRSF.
The BIPHA season commences in September each year, with each region running league competitions at various age divisions from Under 10, through to Under 21 and Senior. The winning team(s) in each age division (U12 -Senior) from each region then go forward to a National Championship held the following summer. The BIPHA National Champion Team in the Senior group will be invited to go forward to take part in the Confederation European Roller Skating (CERS) European Champions Cup.
To encourage the further development of the sport each region runs open competitions at a number of age divisions to select representative Regional Teams, these teams then play in a National Superleague. The
British Inline Puck Hockey Association, is empowered by the British
Roller Sports Federation to select and manage the Great Britain Teams
attending FIRS & CERS sponsored sanctioned Inline Puck Hockey events.
The selection process for the BRSF GB Teams is open to all inline
hockey players regardless of national affiliation, the only limitation
being that the candidate must hold a UK passport, or meet UK sporting
residential requirements. The BIPHA has an ongoing training program for referees and is introducing a coaching development course. Also, whereas previously any girls wishing to play inline hockey had to take their chances playing in a male environment, the BIPHA have recognised the growing number of girls entering the sport nowadays and a number of regions are now developing girl’s hockey with a view to providing a solid foundation for the future of ladies inline hockey.
